Battle Punks – FAQ

By Siriusly Intrepid

This is just some questions that seem to be relatively common on the Battle Punks Discussion Board, plus some general new player information.

1. How do I earn coins?

Earn coins by battling! There’s some reward for each whether you win or lose!

If you need additional coins, you can always purchase some using Newtons, to do this simply hover over your coin total, and select how many you wish to purchase!

2. How do I get Newtons?

You can get some Newtons while playing when levelling up, and occasionally as a special loot or daily log in bonus.

Newtons are mainly a purchasable currency though, so to buy some, hover over your current Newtons total and then select “Add Newtons”, from there select your preferred purchase option and follow the instructions!

3. My energy runs out too fast, I want to play, what can I do?

You maximum energy available increased with the number of friends you have playing, to around 15. You can also purchase a higher maximum energy if you like using Newtons.

You can replenish energy when you need to using food. You can loot some food while playing, and you can also send food to friends using the Free Gifts button above the game, and ask them to send you some in return.

Food that your friends send you is able to be accepted from your Facebook requests page: http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php

Once you have some food, you can use it anytime, hover over your current energy and then select the food you’d like to eat from the list that appears.

4. What do the Lizard outlines around some potential opponents mean?

A lizard around an opponent’s portrait means that they are a “Boss” and a NPC (Non Playing Character).

Beating some Bosses for the first time, or a certain number of particular Bosses, will often result in an Achievement. To check what Achievements are available, select your Profile tab and the select “Achievements” in the top left hand corner. NPCs with the brown / bronze lizard outline are Quest NPCs, visit your Quest tab to view your available Quests (see question 16 for more information about Quests).

Also, some Bosses give you the chance of looting special equipment that is not available anywhere else. These include (please note this list is not necessarily complete):

  • The Butcher – The Butcher’s Cleaver and Butcher’s Guard (Level 12 – Seastone Village)
  • The Packrat – Ender’s Sword and Odie’s Strange Shield (Level 12 – Murktail Swamp)
  • The Pugilist – Pugilism (Level 14 – Murktail Swamp)
  • Da Boogieman – Da Boogieman’s Choppa (Level 18 – Murktail Swamp)
  • Morg – Morg’s Giant Skinner (Level 18 – Shipwreck Cove)
  • Korg – Korg’s Shiv and Korg’s Shell Shield (Level 20 – Shipwreck Cove)
  • Tsehkaan – The Raptor (Level 22 – Shipwreck Cove)
  • FirstMate McEnery – Swashbuckler’s Sabre (Level 23 – Pirate Ship)
  • Capt. William McKraken – Captain’s Flintlock and Ahab’s Harpoon (Level 26 – Pirate Ship)

5. How do I know if an item is lootable, or only able to be purchased?

Items that you do not own yet that are lootable in the map you are currently in are shown in your main Gear tab (where you equip your character) greyed out. For example:

Items lootable in other maps which you do not own will only show up greyed out in your Gear tab greyed out when you visit those maps.

When viewing all Gear purchasable in your current map in the Shop tap, any Gear that is shown there that was not shown in your main Gear tab (where you equip your character) is only able to be purchased.

6. I won an Achievement, where can I see all the ones I’ve earned and which ones I still need to work on?

To see your list of Achievements which includes those you’ve completed and those you are still working towards select your Profile tab and the select “Achievements” in the top left hand corner. ;)

7. What do the symbols mean next to each weapon?

Each piece of equipment has some simple stats to help you compare them, measured from one star (not so good in that category) to five stars (amazing in that category). Please note that the level of the item also has an effect, so a level 11 weapon with 3 stars of power may be more powerful than a level 8 weapon with 4 stars of power for example.

For weapons (both one and two handed):

  • The exclamation mark (!) indicates how powerful the weapon is (how much damage it will do per blow).
  • The target (circles) indicates how accurate the weapon is, with greater accuracy you have a greater chance of hitting your opponent where it causes most damage.
  • The arrows indicate the reach of the weapon (meaning weapons with a greater reach can hit opponents while you are still further away than those with less reach).
  • The lightning bolt indicates the speed of the weapon, how quickly you can hit.
  • The hand indicates how good a grip it has (the higher grip the less likely it is the weapon may be disarmed during battle).

For shields:

  • The exclamation mark (!) indicates how strong the shield it, which relates to how much damage it can absorb per blow taken.
  • The star indicates how thick it is, thicker shields should be able to absorb more damage before being disarmed than thinner shields.
  • The curvy arrow indicates how deflective it is. Deflective shields should have a greater chance of your opponent’s blow “bouncing off” and hence helping avoid serious damage.
  • The lightning bolt indicates the speed of the shield, how quickly you can block.
  • The hand indicates how good a grip is has (the higher grip the less likely it is the shield may be disarmed during battle).

8. Can I control my character during the fight to influence the result?

No, fights are pre-calculated blow-by-blow, what you see is effectively a graphic replay of what happened, it cannot be altered. However, your arrangement of Flasks (explained in Question 15) can give you some control of how your character acts (still during the pre-calculation) at different stages of the fight.

9. How does it select which weapon I use first?

This is selected randomly from what you have equipped. However if you do not have a shield equipped, your character will always select a two-handed weapon as preference to a one-handed one. ;)

10. Does the clothing I choose to wear affect the fight?

Currently the clothes you pick have no effect on the fight.

11. What is fame, and how does it affect the game?

Currently this seems to be mainly for ranking, but who knows what the Devs have in store for the future. You generally receive more fame for beating Punks with higher fame.

12. I no longer earn experience, what happened?

This is most likely because you reached the highest level currently available. As at July, 2010 the maximum level is 23!

13. I’m having issues with the game, what do I do?

Battle Punks have posted information specifically to assist with troubleshooting here: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=356004406763

14. What do all the Boosts do?

Please note that this list is in level order. If you’d prefer to view it in alphabetical order click here!

Avoidance – Improved version of Evasion. (Increases your chance of dodging hits.)

Knockback – Increases your chance of performing a Surprise attack when your opponent tries to attack!

Dark Bargain – Adds extra power to your attacks, but you also lose 9 health points each time you land a hit.

Midas Medallion – Adds an extra two coins to your standard rewards after battling.

Cortez’s Medallion – Adds an extra coin to your standard rewards after battling.

15. What are Flasks?

Flasks are a way to give you more control over your battle. They offer different attributes, for example additional damage or health regeneration, and you can purchase them and add them to the Flasks circles above your main gear in the order to use during battle.

Flasks are permanent, so once you have purchased them they are yours to keep and equip how you like!

Some flasks last a single turn per battle, while some last three turns per battle. Their effects and how long they last are detailed in the store, and is repeated here. Please note that you unlock the ability to purchase and use more flasks as you increase in level. So if you are a lower level, not all of these options may be available.

16. What are Quests and how do I do them?

Quests are a series of specific tasks for you to complete which result in rewards (some even allow you to upgrade your items)! Each area has specific Quests, and some Quests are only unlocked when those before it are completed!

To view the Quests available to you currently, select the Quests tab from the main page. Quests will only be active once you accept them, so to start working on a particular Quest, click it, and a pop up will come up telling you the mission and rewards available, simply select “Okay” to make the Quest active.

Once a Quest is active, anything you do towards that quest while battling automatically counts, once you have completed the requirements, to receive your rewards you need to return to the Quest page and click the completed quest again to register completion! Many Quests that require specific Bosses to be beaten, or items to be found in battle, can only be completed in specific map areas.

Some Quests (such as weapon upgrade Quests) may involve items you purchase from the Shop as well as those found in Battle, to purchase such items go to the Shop and browse the Quest Items tab.

Some Quests also involve Cooking, to Cook, firstly hover your cursor over your current energy and then select Cook Food from the drop down list!

17. What is armour?

Armour is in-built protection which reduces the damage received from incoming hits. As you level up, your armour automatically increases, so a level 12 punk will have higher armour than a level 11 punk for example. Hence a level 12 punk would have an additional advantage when fighting a level 11 punk, with the level 12 being capable of doing more damage with the same build combination as the level 11, due to the armour difference.

18. What are Battle Markers and how do I use them?

Battle Markers are quest items that you collect to be able to participate in the Battle Club series of quests once at level 23 on the Pirate Ship. A certain number of Battle Markers is required for entry to each quest in the series. These are as follows:

Battle Club I – 1 Battle Marker
Battle Club II – 10 Battle Markers
Battle Club III – 25 Battle Markers
Battle Club IV – 50 Battle Markers

To see how many Battle Markers you currently have go to:

Shop -> Items -> Quest Items -> Mine and your Battle Markers should be shown in the second drop down list available in that section.

So start collecting them early to ensure that you have plenty available to participate in the Battle Club quests! (Please note that you also have to have completed the previous Battle Club quest in addition to having the appropriate number of Battle Markers available for entry to start the next Battle Club quest. Also, the Battle Markers required are removed from your inventory upon you accepting each Battle Club quest.)

Are the items with frames and pink names lootable? How to obtain Captain’s Flintlock for example?

    • No, not all of them are, as Brute Strength for example isn’t. You can check of the items you don’t have yet which are lootable by visiting each area and checking your Gear tab as per Question 5. You have a possibility of looting Captain’s Flintlock when defeating Capt. William McKraken on the Pirate Ship as per question 4. ;)

Is the “+ inventory set extra gear in battle or gear to switch to outside of battle?

    • It’s another build set up for you to be able to choose to switch to before battle! (So it doesn’t allow you to take more into battle, just allows you to have a couple of alternative gear sets ready to just pick from (at the top in the screen where you select your opponents) just before you fight!

Do upgraded boost stack like heavy hands to stone hands or pugilist master pugilist?

    • They do stack, however the lower level boosts are less effective, so in some cases aren’t worth the additional space. It’s up to you to work out whether the additional space is worth it to you to include the lower level boosts as well. (Basically the effectiveness of lower level boosts for you decreases as your level increases.)
